Eduflections (Volume 2. Issue 2)

A teacher affects eternity;he can never tell where his influence stops- Henry Adams

A teacher has a tremendous influence on a child’s life. That teacher could be the parent or an actual teacher in the four walls of a classroom. Parents as teachers is called homeschooling; which is a legalized form of education in our country. Johnson and I had the privilege of homeschooling our daughters for eleven years before they went to school outside of our home. Grateful to God for those years-what a blessing that lives on!l!

In our society, teachers wear so many hats that are not part of their educational responsibilities yet essential to their effectiveness and success with each of their students. Teachers  have become coaches, motivating their students and cheering them along their educational journeys. Teachers have become counselors in their own way; providing guidance for their students. Teachers have become mothers nurturing their students. Other hats teachers wear are that of nurse, judge, mediator, audio visual expert, custodian, referee, social worker and of course educator.

With the many hats teachers wear they need our constant encouragement as a community that believes in their effectiveness and influence on a child’s life. All over the country we have shortage of teachers. We are then faced with the question; how can we retain great teachers? There is a new documentary film -The American Teacher that is geared towards raising the awareness of the shortage of teachers and what we can do as a community to encourage, retain and reward excellent teachers. The documentary film narrated by Academy Award-winner Matt Damon, American Teacher chronicles the stories of four teachers who live and work in disparate urban and rural areas of the country. By following these teachers as they reach different milestones in their careers, the film digs into the story of the teaching profession in America today. It shows the experiences of these four young teachers  as they recognize the importance of what they do —influencing the life of a child.

This Saturday- January 21, 2012, teachers all across North Texas will have the opportunity to receive encouragement from our community through the free screening of the documentary film and community collaboration on how we can reward excellent teachers. This special event is free and will be at the SMU Hughes Triggs Theater starting at 10:00AM.  I am honored and thankful for the privilege to serve and support teachers. Indeed the influence of a teacher  lingers for a long time and no one can tell where the influence stops.
