The Spark of Charity

12/24/2014

Christmas time  brings a festivity for life like no other. In our family, it brings a much needed slower pace. We all look forward to catching up with family and friends, reading, and enjoying some new movies together. My reading list keeps growing day-by-day. We started off our Christmas break last Friday with the new Annie movie starring Jamie Fox as the billionaire and mayoral candidate Will Stacks. With so many good causes and life principles woven into the movie; such as foster-care, literacy, courage, diligence; the movie is a great round-table be it at home or school. Though school is out for Christmas break, it can be a great back-to-school classroom discussion.

Despite the fact that the movie is the same storyline as the original, there are many junctions in the new movie that are woven specially for the  21st century child. Little Annie played by Quvenzhané Wallis puts a great spark to the entire plot line of the story. Her character and personality is captivating.

Annie displays a character trait that defies all odds: charity. Another word for charity is “love”. Despite the harsh treatment she and her friends had received from their foster mother (Ms. Hannigan), when Annie had the chance to return evil for evil, she automatically defaulted to charity. She spoke well of Ms. Hannigan, who on the other hand found it very difficult to believe that Annie would do that. That act of kindness from Annie would begin the transformation for Ms. Hannigan. Could it be that this automatic charity default Annie had is a good indication of the power of consistency when it comes to living successfully? This is a good question for any round-table with the new year rolling in.

Mr. Stacks with guidance from his advisers on the other hand; started off with how he could use Annie’s situation to his own political advantage. However, the billionaire would soon find out that this little girl has so much to teach him about charity and honesty. Stacks learned quickly that it is indeed more fulfilling to give than to receive. This Christmas and beyond; let’s give charity to everyone we encounter; whether it is deserved or not. The language of charity is transforming.

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” – I Corinthians 13:13 (KJV).

The "Net" In Networking

12/13/2014

Recently my husband and I attended a networking event in the DFW area with some friends. The event brought together professionals from different fields to collaborate about the future of technology in developing countries. Technology is always evolving. For some of us, we are still catching up. Then we have others that have fully caught up and envisioning the next line of device technology has to offer.

We have schools where each student has an abundance of devices to work with both at school and home. Due to the abundance we are accustomed to; it is sometimes difficult to believe that we still have schools where students do not have access even to the minimum technological device at school and none at home.  For students in the later part, I am always excited and thankful when I come across something that can help leverage their access; however little it may be. Such was this recent networking event.

One of the device designers I met at this event shared information she received from an engineering professor from another event she attended. A great example of the “cycle of life” in motion. As we “know”, we "share" with those we meet. The knowledge shared circulates till it gets to the specific recipients that will not only receive the information but be impacted by it. She shared about a low cost internet opportunity for families on free or reduced lunch. Depending on the zip code, the internet may be free or as low as $9.95 per month. There is also information on purchasing computers at a very low discount price and free training is provided for some zip codes. I checked out several zip codes and found a variety of availability of internet service and computers. This is the age where technology is becoming increasingly vital for student success. Following up to learn more; I discovered that this opportunity was made possible through partnerships with various local internet service providers in 49 states. Very exciting!

EveryoneOn is the generous national non-profit making this rare opportunity possible for students with no technology access either at school or home. Its vision is to eradicate the digital divide by making high-speed, low-cost internet service and computers, and free digital literacy courses accessible to all unconnected Americans. Visit EveryoneOn at https://everyoneon.org/get-connected/ to learn more.

With the Christmas break just around the corner, this will be a good time to get students with no technology access connected. Let’s all get the word out to our communities that can benefit from this unusual opportunity and create many ripples. This is the “net” in networking!!

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” - Philippians 2:4 ESV.
