Gift of Life

4/20/2015

April is National Donate Life Month, which aims to bring awareness, educate and register individuals as organ, eye or tissue donors. Statistics indicate there are approximately 124,000 men, women and children waiting for organ transplants here in the United States and recent data shows there were 14,257 available organ donors in 2013. An organ donor gives the gift of life and can save or enhance the quality of life for up to eight people who need an organ transplant.

Daphne, a beautiful and thriving young adult who our family has had the pleasure of knowing for over sixteen years, is one of these organ donors. Her family and ours enjoyed the season of parenting together. From Awana clubs to Bible quiz competitions, daddy-daughter dances and mom-daughter outings, our families share many special memories. Daphne graduated from Baylor University in 2012 and this December will graduate with joint JD/MPH degrees from Emory University.

While Daphne was at Baylor, she met Brittany and they became good friends.  Faced with serious health challenges, Brittany had to withdraw in the middle of a semester during her freshman year to attend to her health. She was later diagnosed with lupus. Despite the adverse challenges of lupus, Brittany came back her second year of college and completed her music education degree at Baylor. Currently, Brittany is a high school choir teacher for Dallas ISD and is the pianist for her church.

Later it was discovered that the lupus had done permanent damage to Brittany’s kidneys. Hence, she began dialysis and was placed on the donor transplant list. While at Baylor, Daphne knew she was destined to give Brittany one of her kidneys. She persevered in prayer until she received the go-ahead in her spirit to take the step and get tested to see if she was a match for Brittany. After testing, Daphne found out she was a match on all required levels of testing for the organ transplant.

On May 19, 2015, the surgery will take place - Daphne will give Brittany one of her kidneys. What a remarkable woman of purpose! Additionally, Brittany’s understanding of divine encounters is incredible. She had this to say when I spoke with her - “You never know who God would use for you or what role someone would play in your life.” As a community of educators let us support these beautiful, brave women financially and prayerfully.

Youth Leadership Program

Parents and educators are well aware of this prominent Igbo and Yoruba proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child”.  The “village” denotes a community of not just blood relatives but the community at large that has the best interest of the child at heart. Parents that have raised children who are thriving adults know first hand the benefits of having a “village” during the season of raising children.

My husband and I have been fortunate to have “villages” both here in the U.S. and around the world not just while raising our three daughters; but even now that they are thriving adults.  Each one of our daughters had the opportunity for exchange programs. As a family, we also had the opportunity to host exchange students from different parts of the world.

One avenue for student exchange programs is through the American Youth Leadership Program- a leadership training exchange program for U.S. high school students and adult mentors.  The program is administered through the U.S. Department of State. Students travel abroad to gain firsthand knowledge of world cultures and observe globally important issues, such as the environment and climate change, food security and nutrition, the role of the media, and science and technology.

Through daily interactions with local families, students learn the language, culture, and engage in community service projects. The stay typically is for four weeks. Students must be between the ages of 15-17 and must have at least one semester of school left after the exchange program. There are additional requirements depending on the destination country. Students can travel to China, Cyprus, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ghana, Hong Kong, or Thailand. Adult mentors can be teachers, trainers, administrators, counselors, or community leaders who work with youth. To learn more and apply visit: http://goo.gl/G7Vq4r
