Four years ago last weekend, I had recently graduated from high school as the salutatorian of my 750-student class. I was on my way to study mechanical engineering at Southern Methodist University on a full-ride scholarship. But the most exciting thing to me at that time was neither of the aforementioned accomplishments. In the first 8 months of 2011, my six year prayer of asking God what His will for my life was and what He purposed me for had been answered, confirmed and reaffirmed in various miraculous and prophetic ways. This was the most exciting thing.
Finally had a glimpse into what God had destined for me. I was excited beyond words. I was ecstatic and bubbling over because of these revelations and the supernatural insight I now had. I knew my purpose and was determined to pursue it. With this determination, I embraced my calling and the anointing God had placed upon my life. Realizing I had a part for the anointing to grow in my life and upon my life, I did not take my calling and the anointing of the Trinity lightly. First, I began to make intentional choices for the desired consecration I wanted to live in as I began university. Secondly, I made some decisions to align my goals and purpose. For example, no more listening to secular music, deleting of my personal Facebook account to remove what had been distractions till this point and engage in more focused communication practices and relationships. In response to the stand I took, God began to open doors for me to proclaim His truth about purity of body, soul and spirit. My witness and the power and authority behind it were increasingly strengthened the more I pressed in. There was one desire in my heart and that was to please God. The closer I got to the Holy Spirit, the more I wanted to know more and be with Him, and the more I wanted to be used in the moment wherever I happened to be for God’s glory.
Fast-forward 4 years later to my graduation from SMU, I was blessed with the opportunities to study and work in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Bali, Indonesia. The Holy Spirit enabled me to earn two more degrees than originally expected on top of my BS Mechanical Engineering: a BS Mathematics and a MS Systems Engineering. I graduated in May, interviewed in June and in July was offered a full-time engineering position with one of the leading Engineering companies in the world. The opportunity allows me to make immediate impact and put everything I’ve learned thus far to good use. Following graduation, I registered for the first professional exam and took the FE in July. On my twenty-first birthday, I received the results and passed. This is all a testimony to the greatness of God and His glory, not my abilities. I am very aware of my human limitations, but very confident in the power of the Holy Spirit that resides in me. Everything I am at twenty-one years old can only be attributed to God, the wonderful family and friends He blessed me with. Though young, yet my life story is a testament to the biblical principle of sowing and reaping. As a result of consistently pressing in toward God, and making the commitment to becoming an unashamed and grateful worshipper I have discovered more of God’s power so much so that I can go out into the world and love just like my Abba Father does. God has given me a consistent harvest of blessings and greater opportunities than I could have imagined. But most importantly He has given me oneness with the Spirit that knocks me off my feet all the time.
My hope and prayer is that my testimony can inspire other young believers who have just completed high school and are off to college this month. College is scary and exciting all at the same time. The parental supervision that once ensured many things is gone; however, God’s presence is actively there always. College is a transitional time in which one becomes more or less solely responsible for his or her choices and actions. Some cannot handle this new sense of responsibility and in the end regret their decisions but some rise above and really find their purpose and discover who they are in Christ. I challenge you to ask God what He wants of you. Ask your Heavenly Father what His will for your life is. Ask God to use you and send you wherever He wishes. Ask God to reveal more of His love to you so that you can represent Him well. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom. You will need it for those pressing situations where you are presented with the choice to stand up for Christ or to stay numb on what you believe. Ask the Spirit for guidance and supernatural strength. And thank God for bringing you thus far. Thank Him for having a predestined, divine purpose for your life and for empowering you to fulfill it in His time and in His strength. And praise Him for the sacrifice of His Son, our joint-heir- Jesus Christ. For without Him you are nothing and would not have the open communication you freely enjoy with the Father.
In summary, my educational journey has been empowered by the Holy Spirit. Education and loving God passionately goes together. God is interested in every aspect of our lives. Never forget that God cares for you dearly. So much so that He constantly knows the number of hairs on your head in spite of the fact that the number is always changing. If He cares enough to count how many hairs you have on your head then what more does He need to show you that you can come to Him openly for anything. Lift up every day, every quiz, every meal, every class and every assignment to Him. Ask Him to empower you so that you are not concerned or bothered when people make fun of your faith in God that you are too deep for reality. God blesses “deep” whatever that looks like to people. Lift it all up to Him and just wait expectantly for what He will do for you. He is always faithful. I am a witness! God is a great rewarder!
Here are my favorite scriptures not only during my college days but even now.
“Greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4b
“If God is for us who can be against us?” Romans 8:31b
“For, “who can know the Lord’s thought? Who knows enough to teach Him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:16
“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.” 2 Corinthians 3:5
“The course of our life is in Your power.” Psalm 31:15a
