The High Yield Approach

3/9/2015

A dear educator friend was talking with me recently about high yield instructional strategies.  She asked for input on her upcoming research in this area.  Dr. Marzano’s high yield instructional strategies quickly came to mind. These have been very helpful to thousands of classroom teachers over the decade. According to Marzano’s research, there are nine major high yield instructional strategies. Two out of these nine strategies have the highest instructional yield (Similarities/Differences at 45% and Summarization/note taking at 34%). These high yield instructional strategies suggest best practices that improve or enhance students’ achievement.

As I began the outline for my friend’s project, the Holy Spirit quickened my understanding on this topic in preparation for my ladies Bible study group.  I saw the correlation between the physical and the spiritual on this topic. Classroom teachers maximize their daily practice using high yield instructional strategies that help their students learn best hence leading to mastery.  As spiritual beings, we are charged to live carefully (Ephesians 5:15-17) using a similar high yield approach in our times. As I completed the project outline, it was evident God had used the project outline as preparation for the ladies Bible study. It’s so much fun walking with God!

So here is my challenge to you: spend some time to find out what your high yields are. Once you discover these high yields, you will discover a divinely well laid-out plan of constant encouragement, support and purpose.  Concentrate on your high yields and observe how God fills you to overflowing to live out your purpose. Here are some examples of my high yields that continuously feed my spirit, soul and body:

·      Study and meditation in the word of God

·      Worship and prayer time

·      Fellowship/date with my husband

·      Date times with daughters (facetime dates for our global traveler)

·      Serving God’s precious people

·      Ladies Bible study group

·      Time with extended families, friends and mentors

·      Working and collaborating with colleagues

·      Fellowship/worship at church

·      Self care/pampering time

·      Double dates with longtime friends

As the week begins, I want to wish my incredible husband a happy birthday!  You are a blessing and gift from God to us all. Celebrating you is a high yield for us all.  You have brought out the best not only in our daughters and I, but also in all those that know you. Thankful to God for blessing me with a combination in you as an incredible husband and wonderful friend. This is to many more blessed years!!!

To all my fellow Texans Happy Spring Break! Love and Blessings to All!!
