Timeless Message of Christmas

12/24/2014

Christmas brings the whole world together. It's message transcends ages. However, there are some mixed messages about this holy season that the enemy of Truth would like to spread more than the truth of God's love for mankind. With many yet to know the reality of this season, we have an opportunity to proclaim the timeless message of our Lord.

I was at the store last week to pick up some items for one of our community Christmas gatherings. As I approached the cashier, I wished him a Merry Christmas. Instantly, he responded he couldn’t wait for it to be over. I asked him why he felt this way. He began to explain to me, the long hours of work he had to put in the last three weeks and the many complaints and returns his store had to handle. From his vantage point, we could see why he felt the way he did about this holy season. Our conversation gave me the opportunity to minister the life of Christ to him. He stepped away quickly from the register and we engaged in prayer. God was glorified! Right there in the store a lie about Christmas was dispelled.

One way or the other, I am sure we have all experienced this same thing about wrong messages of Christmas. The only way to combat the lies of the enemy is to declare, speak and stand on the truth of God’s word. The Bible gives us all we need to know about Christmas. There are several to meditate on. Here are just three timeless focal messages:

Christmas is a message of redemption: Matthew 1:21 “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." The birth of Jesus was the doorway to our redemption. He was born to save us; as part of God’s magnificent plan for humanity. Without Christmas, there is no Cross and no Resurrection. Christmas is central to our redemption.

Christmas is a message of love: John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. God’s deep love for His creatures warranted an action that validated His love for us. His own beloved Son, not another creature, but His own Son, God sent demonstrating how deep He loves to have us back to Himself. By believing on the Person of Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross, we can be saved and have eternal fellowship with the Creator of the universe. This is profound love in action.

Christmas is a message of adoration: Luke 2:15 “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." God made sure the shepherds were part of His plan of Christ’s birth. The shepherds paint a great picture for us on what adoration involve. Luke further explains to us in verse 20 that “the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”  Part of the wonder of Christmas, is the privilege God gives us to see promises manifested. When this happens, we have this longing of adoration to God because of His faithfulness. It’s an adoration that keeps us fixed and awestruck on Him. Brothers and sisters, may we never tire of adoring our LORD!

From our family to yours, have a very Merry Christmas!

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14

Better Than Sacrifice

12/1/2014

Dear brothers and sisters: Can you believe it’s already December? The last month of the year 2014. The number 12 denotes “Government”. December brings us to the celebration of the Savior of the world-Jesus- upon whose shoulders entire government rest (Isaiah 9:6).

Yet, during this time, we see many things that would attempt to diminish this celebration of our Lord but not His honor and essence as Redeemer. Apart from the commercialization of the season, here in America, we are facing the cry for justice with the Ferguson case.

May I plead with us Christ followers on the Ferguson case, to seek the heart of God, pray tenderly as if we were on both sides and desire God’s will manifested and not man’s agenda of solution. There is injustice, there is racial bias, there are broken systems not just here in America that point to our need of a Savior. In spite of all these, we have the answer- in the Person of Jesus Christ: His ways, His truth, His life and His big heart of love for all people. If we seek the face of God, He will show up and show out on our behalf as His followers. He will move in unprecedented ways than what we have ever seen in our time. He will bring restoration and healing. Our God is the only One capable of such. After all, He is Creator and knows perfectly how to rightly solve our human problems. He has never failed at this nor lost any battle pertaining to His creation. Let us seek God and listen attentively for how He will want to use each one of us to manifest Himself to bring peace. Let us pray that God will defeat all hateful spirit at work and overcome it with the Holy Spirit of love, compassion, gentleness and kindness. Let us make our world better with the life of God that resides in us. We are Christ’s ambassadors!

Also, during this time, it is not uncommon that we start going over goals set in January to see where we are in December. In all of these situations, God is fully interested because He is all about people and manifesting Himself to each one in a way they can understand and appreciate. As you evaluate or assess yourself on those yearly goals, may I admonish you to measure yourself based on obeying God rather than your set goals? Don’t get me wrong, goals are important, but for Christ followers, obedience to God is paramount. In your assessment, ask yourself: Did I obey the Lord’s leading, His direction, the nudge of the Holy Spirit? Did I heed His warning? Did I follow through on what He showed me? Did I seek to know Him more intimately so that I may be Christ-like? Being able to answer these questions is much better assessment for living in Christ.

Samuel was a man of God who knew the difference in assessing set goals and obeying God.  Read the whole chapter of I Samuel 15 to get a deeper understanding of the difference. I Samuel 15:22 provides the clear window for us today: “But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams”.  Our obedience is a better barometer in our walk with God.
