Repost: Summer Travel Part 2

7/28/2017

Beloved brothers and sisters, as a doting dad I am grateful to have three outstanding young women that love Jesus and are living for Him. Their bravery and passion for life is commendable. Recently my beautiful Queen and I moved our oldest daughter to the New York area. It was a move she had dreamed of for a long time. In this repost, my beloved wife chronicles our travel for the move. As it is our desire to create lasting legacies in our communities, my prayer is that there will be something in this repost that will ignite a thought, idea or action that will bless you and your families. We share our lives to help and encourage anyone to believe God for victorious life that is found only in Christ Jesus. God Bless you!

Howdy Friends!

From my last post on our summer travel part one, our family has had five travels all together! The one that will spark your creativity and appreciation is our 23-hour road trip! Yes, you read that correctly-23 hours drive across eight states! It puts the meaning in “road trip”. This road trip completed our oldest daughter’s transition on her big move to New York city to begin the new chapter in her dream place in the IT industry. Additionally, she has honed her print modeling hobby and now has agency representations in the area. She gave her permission to share on this post. We are excited for her!

Our summer travel part two was centered on this big move. Driving in two cars we embarked on this long road trip. I was the relief driver for my precious husband and daughter. The plan was for me to relief either of them after extensive driving. The difference from this road trip and our summer travel back in homeschool days was the fact that we intentionally built in prolonged rest times. This road trip was different; it required we arrive in New York before the apartment office closed for the day and weekend. We were looking at an early office close time on a Friday. So, we started off on a Thursday and drove 23 hours into Friday evening before the apartment office closed. All thanks to God, we did make it before the closing time! God is so good! I am so proud of my incredible husband, who tirelessly drove most of the long trip, encouraged our oldest through the difficult driving and kept us on schedule to arrive on time. We have a renewed appreciation for flying as a mode of transportation :).

Despite the tight schedule on the trip, we made time to enjoy some major milestones along the way. Here are the highlights of the milestones of the trip.

Arkansas- Hot Springs National Park is a national park located in Hot Springs. A quick visit to this national park gave the chance to see the historic Bathhouse Row. This is a collection of bathhouses, gardens and buildings that is a part of the national park.

Tennessee- This drive was the most extensive of all the states we crossed. We made a stop in Memphis and Nashville. Our stop in Memphis was for an early dinner at the Four Way Soul Food restaurant. This restaurant is well known for been the popular meeting place for civil rights activities from 1940s to 1960s. Displayed all over the restaurant are pictures of leaders involved in the civil rights movement. Our stop in Nashville was to fill up our gas tanks right in downtown Nashville.

Virginia- We made a quick stop at my husband’s alma mater- Virginia Tech on our way in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech is one of the nation’s largest research universities with an extensive research portfolio.

West Virginia- Our drive through West Virginia was short and took us right into Maryland. Many of the states along this stretch of land are quite close.

Maryland- Driving through interstate 81, we passed the beautiful Appalachian Mountains into the city of Hagerstown. The scenery is breath taking.

Pennsylvania- Still driving though the stretch of interstate 81, we passed through the city of Carlisle to connect to the turnpike into New Jersey.

New Jersey- Two major standouts across this state that is extremely close to New York are the Lincoln Tunnel and the fact that it is illegal to fill up your own gas tank! The Garden State has a law against self-service. To buy gas, you sit in your car and wait for the attendant to fill up your tank. The Lincoln Tunnel is a set of three tunnels under the Hudson River that connects New Jersey to New York. The traffic along this tunnel is unbelievable for this Texan!

New York- The captivation of the Lincoln Tunnel is one that will stay with us for a long time. Our family has always flown into New York. This was the first time we drove into the state and it gave us that experience everyone that has ever been in New York traffic talks about. There is a reason it’s New York! You need special driving skills to navigate the roads and fellow drivers.

With summer travels been over comes back to school life realities. Many of my friends head back to school next week to begin preparations for the new school year. Prayers for a blessed year have been offered on behalf of these dedicated educators as the new school year starts. On my end I have a few more travels before the fun of serving leaders in professional learning begins. Enjoy what is left of your summer dear friends. Until my next post; Love & Blessings!!
